Liverpool University Press is the UK’s third oldest university press and has an ambition to be a net zero press, both for operations and publications. The Press approached Zero Carbon Academy to assist them with bespoke training on how to achieve net zero having seen the Toolkit that the Academy had provided to the Independent Publishers Guild. The Press was particularly interested in working out how to best enable its staff to understand how they can help achieve net zero both in the way that the Press operates and the products that it produces. Financial support for this endeavour was provided by the University of Liverpool as part of a far-reaching sustainability programme. The Academy developed a programme of support for the Press within a short time scale, and delivered it between July and November 2022. Support was delivered using a combination of training both in person and on-line, with individual and group sessions, and accompanying material, including templates enabling key aspects of the transition to net zero. Of particular value was the provision of a process that enabled the Press to understand the carbon impact of its suppliers and prioritise actions that would provide the information and incentivises for them to reduce their footprints. For the Press, this enabled them to act on reducing the impacts across their portfolio of books and journals produced both in print and online. At the end of the programme, the Press gained the knowledge, skills and tools, to become one of the first net zero presses in the world.
